What's Photocatalyst
First of all, a catalyst is that does not change in itself for chemical reaction. It serves as speed up chemical reactions or delays speed of a reaction for chemical manufacturing process. There are various types of catalysts by making chemicals. For example, the heat catalyst is used in order to purify the exhaust gas of a car. And the enzyme that is in the living body also serves as a kind of catalyst.

A photocatalyst is that causes a catalyst reaction by light. There have several materials. As photocatalyst the most using material is titanium dioxide (chemical formula: TiO2). The titanium dioxide is color of white. It

  • The photocatalyst is oxidized and broke down various organic matters and change to CO2 and water. This process needs only light. Therefore it chemical reaction is less damaging to the environment and pollution-free product.
  • The photocatalyst bring forth active oxygen. This active oxygen is more high oxidative than sodium hypochlorite or ozone. But active oxygen is very safety, because it associative strength is very strong and quickly, therefore it cannot swim in the air.
  • Oxidative of active oxygen combine with almost organic matters materials.
Rationale

There can break anti-bacterial, dirt, etc down into CO2 and water by the light energy, and it can be used regardless of the interior of a room and outdoor one, such as the self-cleaning effect, the air purification effect, etc. They are the environmental improvement goods of great promise.
The photocatalyst reaction principle is that break various organic matters down into CO2 and water by active oxygen is existing in the state like a film on the photocatalyst coating surface where light is irradiated.

    Detail of reaction

  1. There generate electricity in the titanium dioxide when it on illuminated the light. Titanium dioxide is excitation state and hole (h+) is generated when an electron (e-) is intensified.
  2. An electron is changed to superoxide anion by oxygen and hole is changed to hydroxyl radical by moisture in the air. There is active oxygen.
  3. The photocatalyst reaction principle is that break various organic matters down into CO2 and water by active oxygen (superoxide anion and hydroxyl radical) is existing in the state like a film on the photocatalyst coating surface where light is irradiated.
  4. Made up figure of organic substance has molecule of bound of carbon and oxygen or molecule of bound of carbon and hydrogen. Active oxygen is combined with carbon or oxygen. Therefore it takes off to cut molecular bond of carbon and oxygen or carbon and hydrogen.
  5. Active oxygen oxidized power is stronger than sodium hypochlorite or ozone. But it broke out from photocatalyst cannot has a place in the air, because it change to CO2 and water very quickly. It is running reaction various substance in the air. Therefore it cannot takes in human body and does not pool a sealed room.
Safety
  • Used by Photocatalyst is a titanium dioxide (chemical formula: TiO2). It is insoluble ceramic.
  • Titanium dioxide has been using as food additive since 1968 in US and 1983 in Japan.
  • And it is using for various industrial materials as color pigment into beauty product, paint, colorant, etc in the world.
